The purpose of this blog is to discuss and document issues surrounding the body, dis/ability, illness, health. It is meant to serve as an investigation into these issues, prying them apart, looking into them a little bit deeper, maybe even deeper than that. Medications will be discussed. Healthcare is a topic of great concern. Body criticism. Art. Activism. Anything and everything.

Christa Donner at +medicine cabinet

Christa Donner’s installation, Non-Prescription, is now up at apartment gallery space +medicine cabinet which also houses the space secondBEDROOM.

You walk into the bathroom and the medicine cabinet above the sink is open.  Instead of reflecting back to you your image, it shows you your insides.  Your organs pop out at you.  They complicate what you may know about your body’s biology and what may be an imaginary account of that science.  Donner plays with our physiology, creating narratives for what is taking place inside us; she explains why internal events happen the way they do.

What is normal about the body’s functions becomes a site of investigation; it is not assumed that the body has to function in any one particular way.  Pathology becomes less important - what all can be considered normal instead becomes the focus.

Christa Donner is an artist working in print media, works on paper, wall drawings, site-specific installations, and other public projects that take the form of zines to explore perceptions about the human body.  She teaches currently at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

+medicine cabinet is located in the bathroom at 3216 s. Morgan st. apt 4R, Chicago, IL, the same address that houses the secondBEDROOM.  To make an appointment, call 630.849.7750.
